Common questions

What documents do clients need for their tax return?

It depends on their situation. Individuals usually need details of income the ATO doesn't pre-fill, receipts and records for deductions, and statements for investments such as rental property, shares and crypto. Businesses also need bank statements, their accounting records and year-end figures such as stock, money owed and assets bought. Docbench builds the list from the client type and situations you tick, based on the ATO's guidance on records you need to keep, including rental property records and crypto records.

Is the checklist up to date for 2025–26?

It follows ATO guidance as at October 2026. For example:

  • The fixed rate method for working from home (70 cents an hour for 2024–25 and 2025–26) needs a record of the actual hours worked from home for the whole year, and a record for each running expense. An estimate of hours isn't accepted.
  • Health insurers only send a private health insurance statement if asked, and the details are usually pre-filled.
  • A deduction for personal super contributions needs the fund's acknowledgement of the notice of intent before it's claimed.
  • Trustee resolutions on income need to be made by 30 June, or earlier if the trust deed says so.

Rules change, so check each checklist before you send it.

Can I add my logo and my own items?

Yes. Add your logo and brand colour once (they're saved in your browser for next time), then edit, untick or add any item. You can also change the message at the top and how clients should send their documents, including a link and QR code for your client portal.

Is Docbench really free?

Yes, with no charge and no credit card. Docbench doesn't use AI, so there's no daily limit on checklists. We email you a 6-digit code the first time to confirm it's you, and you can email yourself up to 10 checklists a day. See our fair use policy.

Is my clients' information stored?

No. Docbench works in your browser. Your practice details and logo are saved only in your browser, and client details aren't stored by Akinary. They only reach our server if you press Email me, to send the checklist to your own verified email address, and they aren't kept after it's sent. Don't enter tax file numbers or other sensitive details: the checklist doesn't need them.

How do I send the checklist to clients?

Download the PDF and copy the email text into your email, client portal or practice software. On a phone or tablet, the Share button attaches the PDF to an email or message for you. Or press Email me to get both in your inbox, ready to send to your client.

Does it work for companies and trusts?

Yes. Choose individual, sole trader, partnership, company or trust. Business clients get items such as bank statements, payroll and Single Touch Payroll finalisation, assets bought, stock and loans. Companies also get loans to shareholders and directors (Division 7A), and trusts get the trustee's distribution resolution.

Based on current ATO guidance

Items follow the ATO’s record-keeping guidance as at October 2026, such as actual hours for working from home, the fund’s acknowledgement before claiming personal super contributions, and trustee resolutions by 30 June. It’s a general list: check it suits each client before you send it.
